M1 CLOSED as massive car blaze brings traffic to standstill with 6 MILE tailbacks

Drivers have been urged to divert their routes

A MASSIVE car fire on the M1 has brought traffic to a halt - with drivers stuck in six miles of tailbacks.

Drivers have been warned to expect 45 minute delays after the blaze near Junction 15 for Northampton and Milton Keynes.

A car fire on the M1 has caused major delays

Lanes one and two are still closed while emergency services tackle the fire, which erupted just after 9.30AM.

Shocking pictures show flames ripping through the vehicle as plumes of this grey smoke billow into the air.

The condition of the driver is not yet known.

National Highways posted on X: "Traffic released on the #M1 south between J15 #Northampton & #MiltonKeynes.

"Lanes 1, 2 and 3 (of 4) remain closed to allow @Bucksfire to work safely at scene. Our #TrafficOfficers are assisting with traffic management.

"45 minute delays and approx. 6 miles congestion on approach.

The traffic agency warned drivers that there is six miles of congestion and six miles of traffic with up to 45 minute queues.
