Broadmoor Hospital tried to stop The Sun on Sunday calling Yorkshire Ripper a ‘beast’

BOSSES at Broadmoor Hospital, where Sutcliffe was held for 32 years, tried to stop The Sun on Sunday calling him a “beast” despite the fact that he described HIMSELF as a beast.
They wrote to us after we published a string of exclusives about Sutcliffe’s cushy life there, including one that revealed his first trip out in public for 34 years.
We captured pictures of the fiend being taken for treatment on his eyesight at an NHS Hospital in Berkshire in September 2015, and mingling with other patients in public areas.
Under the headline, “Ripper Out”, we said, “Cuffs off, beast jokes with guards.”
It was accompanied by a picture of Sutcliffe, the last one taken in public, strolling in the autumn sunshine without handcuffs among unsuspecting members of the public.
West London Mental Health NHS Trust, which runs Broadmoor, wrote to us accusing us of “prejudice” and “discrimination” and demanded we move pictures from our website. We refused, stating the public had a right to know of a high-profile killer’s tax-funded treatment at an NHS facility.

In April 2015, we also revealed plans to move him to medium and low-security Thornford Park Hospital in Berkshire. The plan was shelved after our story.
Sutcliffe said he was “a beast” at his Old Bailey trial in 1981.
