THIS is what the end of the world will look like, according to a New York artist.

‘The City’ shows deserted libraries, casinos, and laundrettes in ruins after an apocalyptic disaster.

Artist Lori Nix created miniature scenes of the apocalypse the size of a dolls house.

But by photographing them up close, Nix has made it seem like the models are life size.

Nix has spent years creating her post-apocalyptic visions.

She told CNN: "I'm really not much of a traveller, except in my head. I am by nature a homebody.

"Rather than go out into the world in search of these scenes, I choose to stay in my apartment and build my own worlds."

Nix has created scenes of destruction and mayhem, predicting a desolate future for humanity.

The once busy thoroughfares of libraries, museums and tube carriages are deserted.

It is clear that humans have not lived in these spaces for a long time.

In Nix’s visions of shopping centres and libraries, trees and plants have started to take over the buildings.

She said: "I have always been drawn to ideas of danger and disaster.

"With 'The City,' I was taking inspiration from my current surroundings in New York City. I'm surrounded by amazing architecture, neighborhood bodegas, world-renowned museums and cheap Chinese food."

Nix’s tiny world is cluttered and chaotic as tables, chairs and everyday objects are strewn everywhere.

She added: "I want to encourage people to really think more about the world around them, and the difficulties we as a species are facing."
