In a harrowing call played to the jury, Yvonne Eaves is heard telling the operator she and her partner turned up for an appointment and saw “two terrified ladies” running out screaming.

They told her that Sir David, 69, was dead before Ms Eaves found herself confronted by Ali wielding a blood-stained carving knife.

She pleaded on the call: “Please, please, quick now a man is wielding a knife. He’s threatened me, they say he’s killed…he’s killed David Amess.”

Her partner, Darren King, is heard saying: “I can’t get it off him.” Ms Eaves said: “He’s gonna try and stab you. Darren, Darren, come out.”

Ms Eaves told the operator he threatened all four of them, adding: “He wants to get shot apparently. He wants to be a hero. He wants the police to come and shoot him.”

Ali finally dropped the knife when police arrived at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, on October 15.

CCTV of Ali making his way from his home in Kentish Town, North London, to allegedly kill the Southend West MP was also shown to jurors.

He was seen assisting a passenger at Barking rail station before walking to the church, where he spent 25 minutes lying in wait before entering.

He had booked an appointment by email with the dad of five, claiming to be a health worker new to the area.

Jurors heard he targeted other MPs including minister Michael Gove. He denies murder and preparing terrorist acts. The trial continues
