The first alert, covering Nottingham, Manchester and Newcastle, warned torrential rain, hail, lightening and high-speed winds would batter the country from 1pm until 9pm.

The foul weather reached as far north as Aberdeen.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Thunderstorms are developing across northern England and Scotland.

"They may cause disruption and localised flooding on Sunday afternoon and evening."

A second warning, in place from 2pm to 7pm, covered Belfast and large parts of Northern Ireland.

Brits were told to expect flooding, damage to property and travel disruption as the storms pass through.

It comes after most of the UK was issued a health warning amid warmer weather this weekend.

Officials said essential services could be put under "significant" strain from Friday to Monday.

The yellow alert covered the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, London, Yorkshire and The Humber, according to the UK Health Security Agency and Met Office.

It came into force at 9am on June 23 and will end at the same time on June 26.
