While your Facebook and Instagram timelines may be full of loved-up couples walking hand-in-hand in the countryside or sitting by the fire at home playing footsies, they could be in for a rude awakening.

Writing on Twitter, journalist Max Benwell shared the data: “Searches for ‘should I break up with my boyfriend?’ surging right now.”

At the same time, searches for “does my girlfriend love me?” are also soaring: “Lol, searches for ‘does my girlfriend love me?’ are also at an all-time high for the year #nope.”

Taking a stab as to why searches for break up advice are spiked at the moment, Benwell said: “Maybe it’s the Love Actually effect? ‘A time to be honest’ works both ways lol. Or just s*** presents.”

According to data compiled by Lee Byron in 2008 for, the festive period is actually the busiest time of year for breakups.

Luckily, if couples make it through the next few days and into 2017, they should be safe until spring.

Byron found Christmas Day is the day of the year when the smallest number of couples break up, but the frequency of splits increases until peaking again in Spring.
