Woman, 60s, dies & eight others including three children in hospital after horror Co Down smash between lorry & two cars
A WOMAN has died and eight others have been injured following a multi-vehicle crash in Co Down.
Police were alerted to the crash on the Portaferry Road shortly after 10.20am on Friday.
Inspector Cherith Adair, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A red coloured lorry travelling towards Greyabbey had been involved in a collision with a silver Citroen Berlingo people carrier and a white Audi A3 car travelling in the direction of Newtownards.
“Officers attended, alongside colleagues from our partner emergency services.
“A passenger in the Citroen Berlingo, a woman aged in her 60s sadly died at the scene.
“Eight other people, three men, two women and three children, attended hospital for treatment.
“The Portaferry Road remains closed as an examination of the scene continues.”
She added: “Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances of the collision, and would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam or other footage which could assist with our inquiries.

It comes after a woman,50s, lost her life in a separate Kilkenny collision.

The fatal collision occurred on the main N25 road near Gaulstown, Glenmore, Co Kilkenny this morning.
The horror crash involved a car and a truck.
The woman, who was the driver of the car, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
In a witness appeal a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardai and emergency services attended the scene of a two vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred this morning, Friday, April 25, 2025 on the main N25 road near Gaulstown, Glenmore, Co Kilkenny.
"The collision involved a truck and a car. The driver of the car, a female in her 50s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
"Her body was removed from the scene to the mortuary where a post-mortem examination is due to take place.
"The N25 road remains closed at this time. A technical examination is being conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators at present.
"Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to please contact them.
"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N25 New Ross to Waterford road near Gaulstown at around 10.30am are asked to make this available to investigating Gardai.
"Gardai can be contacted at Waterford Garda Station on 051 305300, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."
TEEN'S DEATH
The two collisions today come after a separate incident in Tipperary last night.
An 18-year-old girl died after her car Kilaldry Bridge at Kilmoyler in Cahir and entered the River Aherlow shortly after 10pm.
Her body was recovered from the water this morning by members of the Garda Water Unit and has been removed from the scene to the mortuary.
A post mortem examination is due to take place at a later time.
'VERY TRAGIC DAY'
The teenage girl has been named as Bronagh English and her death has left "a deep sense of shock" in the local community.
Local Councillor John O'Heney told how the entire community is in mourning following the tragedy.
He told The Irish Sun: "I'd just like to extend my deepest sympathies to her family and her friends. It's a very tragic day in Tipperary.

"Such a young life has been taken from us.
"To hear of such a young girl passing away in such a tragic circumstance, it's just a deep sense of shock around the area and throughout the entire community this morning."
