Landmann BBQ review: the air fryer-integrated Fryton BBQ “changes the face of outdoor cooking”

WHEN is a barbecue not a barbecue? Could it be when not only a gas ring but an AIR FRYER is added to the mix?

In a world-first, outdoor grilling expert Landmann has spent three years developing the Fryton 4.1 Gas Barbecue, which astonishingly comes with a 3.5-litre integrated air fryer.

‘Why on earth would you do that?” I hear you ask. And up until doing this Landmann BBQ review, I would certainly have been posing the same question.

But after spending an afternoon cooking out in the garden, my answer would be: “Why not?”

A grill, which is also known as a barbecue or BBQ, is a device that cooks food by applying heat from below. The heat can come from a variety of sources, including charcoal, gas, or electricity. Grills are often used to cook meats, vegetables, and fish. This grill has a black metal exterior and is surrounded by a white fence.

Landmann BBQ review: full review

It may seem a little excessive having a whopping great gas barbecue, an extra gas ring AND an air fryer.

But actually, what it adds up to is a proper high-end outdoor cooker, where there’s no need to keep rushing back and forth to the kitchen to check if the potatoes have boiled or the chips are burning.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say the Landmann Fryton changes the face of outdoor cooking.

It's a fact that people want more from a traditional barbecue. We’ve moved on from the days of having just a huge plate of meat and bread rolls.

And with the addition of the gas ring and air fryer, it almost goads you into upping your game. Sure, you could go down the obvious route and grill some meat while air-frying some chips (which is exactly what we did first).

But you could easily serve up a steak, with rosemary potatoes and some beans picked fresh from the garden. Or air-fried chicken legs with new potatoes and salad. There's a capability for a Fryton pizza stone, as well as a wok, although these cost extra. But it means the list is literally endless.

And the best thing is, it's all with minimal effort. And because the Landmann features gas and electricity working in tandem, your food is done in half the time of a usual barbecue.

Is the Landmann BBQ easy to set up?

Up until now, I’ve always been a charcoal traditionalist, so this was the first time I’ve ever had to build a barbecue. And I’m pleased to say it was surprisingly easy. You get a ton of screws - which mercifully are all the same size.

And it all fits quite sensibly together in the order you would expect. The air fryer has a nice little space to slot in and is screwed down, so it genuinely looks like part of it, not some weird add-on.

Look and performance

At a punchy £599 — plus nearly £100 for a patio gas canister — you would hope that it looks good too, and here it definitely doesn’t let you down.

It feels high-end — everything is smooth and reassuringly weighty —and the cast-iron grill looks amazing.

And with four main gas burners, it's large enough to cook for the family and then some, whether it's meat, veg, fish, halloumi, pizza, or whatever takes your fancy.

But it is also not an absolute monster; it didn’t look out of place in my small urban garden.

It's got a cute little fat collector dish hanging out the back that can be easily taken off and emptied, and there’s a nice cupboard for storage. (It sadly isn’t big enough for the gas canister, which is a shame but not a dealbreaker).

Of course, because there is an electric air fryer, this is going to have to be near a power source, but I hid the extension lead in the cupboard, so it doesn’t have to be right outside your back door if you don’t want it.

The air fryer itself is straightforward and easy to work and for comparison, its 3.5l size may be smaller than a lot of your average kitchen ones, but let's face it, it’s hidden away on your barbecue and not gathering dust on your worktop, so that’s a bonus.

You’re going to need to buy a cover, as you don’t want that electrical component getting soaked over winter, but it definitely looks like it could stand up to the UK weather for years to come.

Landmann BBQ review: the verdict

'Why would you add an airfryer to a barbecue?' is certainly a valid question.

But why wouldn't you? This glitzy, shiny, high end outdoor gas barbecue could change the face of outdoor cooking as we know it. And it will certainly push you to a new level of culinary conquests regardless.
