Cricket fan launches petition to rename Stoke-on-Trent after World Cup hero Ben Stokes

A CRICKET fan has launched a petition to rename Stoke-on-Trent after England’s World Cup hero Ben Stokes.

Dan North, 20, wants the city’s name to be changed to Ben-Stokes-on-Trent.

He has vowed to deliver his petition to MPs if he gets the 100,000 signatures required for a debate in Parliament.

Dan went in to bat for man-of-the-match Ben after Sunday’s epic win over New Zealand.

He said: “I went absolutely mental when we won. This match will go down in history and inspire future young cricket players across this great land of ours.

“I started the petition as a bit of fun to honour the greatest cricketer to walk the Earth.

“He deserves to have the great powerhouse that is Stoke-on-Trent renamed after him”.

Dan, of Stansted, Essex, vowed to turn up to any renaming ceremony in the Midlands city if his is successful. Last night it had 136 signatures — not out.

He added: “I really need all England supporters to sign it.”
