Free iPhone update coming to millions – iOS 18 supported devices list, release date prediction and trick to get it early

APPLE'S giant update for your iPhone is right around the corner – and we've got the details.
The maker unveiled iOS 18 at its WWDC event on Monday, June 10, and the free upgrade might be coming to your handset very soon.
Apple's iOS 18 is the next big software update for your iPhone.
The official release is still a few months away, but it's packed with dozens of new features.
You'll be able to move apps anywhere you like on the Home Screen, and change their icon colors too.
You can also customize the buttons at the bottom of the Lock Screen, and edit the Control Center too.
Your Photos app is better organized and has brand new collections.
And your Mail app will automatically sort emails into categories.
You'll also be able to lock specific apps and even hide them inside special folders to keep them from prying eyes.
There's also a new Apple Intelligence feature (only available on select iPhone models) that upgrades Siri to make the assistant much smarter.
And the update introduces built-in ChatGPT on the iPhone too.
Not all iPhone models are getting iOS 18.
But the good news is that if your iPhone could get iOS 17, it'll also be able to get iOS 18.
Here's the full list:
Here's what Apple CEO Tim Cook had to say about Apple Intelligence...
“We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation," Tim explained.
"Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users.
"Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence.
"And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them.
"This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do."
But it's worth noting that Apple Intelligence will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
However, we'd also expect to see it on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, should they be announced later this year.
Apple hasn't confirmed exactly when the iOS 18 update will be out.
All we know is that it's coming in the "fall", which is far too vague for eager Apple fans to get excited about.
So we've come up with our own predictions for the exact general public iOS 18 release date.
For a start, we know that Apple usually likes to release its iOS updates alongside new iPhone models.
We previously predicted the iPhone 16 release date, which we think wil fall on Friday, September 20, 2024.
And that means there's likely to be an event before that on Tuesday, September 10 – where we'll probably find out the iOS 18 release date for sure.
Normally the iOS update will drop on the Monday before the new iPhone comes out.
So we'd guess that iOS 18 will roll out to the general public on Monday, September 16.
The good news is that dedicated Apple fans won't need to wait until autumn to try iOS 18.
That's because Apple lets developers – and then the public – test out the new software before it goes live to everyone.
This is to help Apple detect and squash any bugs, but it's also great if you want to try the new update early.
Your first option is the developer beta, which is available right now – but it's not recommended.
Firstly because you'll need to enrol as a developer, but also because the software is far likelier to have bugs than later releases.
Your better option is to wait for the public beta.
This is free (and fairly simple) to download, and typically lands in July.
We'll likely hear about the official public beta release date in the coming weeks.
Just go to the Apple Beta page , then register and enrol your iPhone.
Then you can go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the iOS Public Beta once it's out.
But be warned: test software can be buggy, so make sure to back your device up before installing the iOS 18 public beta.
